Why summer at Falls Creek feels so different
Best known as one of Victoria's favourite snow destinations, Falls Creek becomes something quite different when the snow melts. The ski runs turn into open alpine country, the hillsides go green, wildflowers bloom and the pace of life slows right down.
It's a chance to see the mountains at your own speed. Stop for a view, picnic beside a stream, watch clouds drift across the ranges or simply enjoy the quiet. And you don't have to be a skier to fall for the place.
Things to do at Falls Creek in summer
1. Walk the High Country
From gentle village strolls to longer alpine hikes, there's a walk for every level. Trails lead through open mountain country and past rocky outcrops, with views that make every uphill section worthwhile. Depending on the season, you may spot wildflowers and native wildlife.
Making your first steps:
- Wallace Hut: Visit the oldest surviving cattlemen's hut, built by the Wallace brothers in 1889.
- Cope Hut and Mt Cope: Cope Hut is one of the earliest tourist huts, built by the Ski Club of Victoria.
- Climb Mt Cope, one of the most accessible peaks, for 360-degree views across the Bogong High Plains.
- Aqueduct Trail: An easy walk with views over the village, leading to the Rocky Valley Dam.
- Roper's Lookout: Continue over the dam wall for views beyond the village to the valley below.
Tip: Bring water, sun protection, sturdy footwear and an extra layer, and check weather, trail conditions and access before you set off, especially for longer walks.
2. Ride it all: dirt, gravel and tarmac
From singletrack to summit, there's a ride for every kind of wheel.
Mountain biking. Falls Creek is ski-in, ski-out in winter and ride-in, ride-out in summer, with a trail network that starts and finishes in the village. The park's 56 km of flow and technical trails use the mountain's 600 m vertical drop, with options from absolute beginner to double black, including a new UCI downhill trail. Blue Dirt's uplift shuttles help you fit in more laps, and the bike hub has a cafe and rental bikes. The season kicks off with the Ignition MTB Festival on 4–6 December 2026.
Gravel. Grind across the Bogong High Plains on a network of gravel and backcountry routes that suit gravel and mountain bikes. They're part of the wider Ride High Country gravel network, so stay a few days and explore the region. Gravel routes are generally open in the green season, from November to early May [confirm].
Road. Ride the road everyone talks about. Falls Creek is the start and finish of Bicycle Network's Peaks Challenge, a 235 km ride with more than 4,000 metres of climbing and a 13-hour deadline that has become a legend. Accommodation is in high demand around the event, so book early. Prefer your own pace? Ride the climb on any summer day, or make Falls Creek a stop on your own High Country road trip.
Whatever you ride, check which trails and facilities are open before you travel, and choose a route that suits your experience and equipment.
3. Soak in and soak up the scenery
Sometimes the best part of a holiday is having nowhere in particular to be. Take a scenic drive through the Alpine National Park region, find a spot for a picnic, or photograph the ridgelines and changing light. Nature lovers can watch for native birds and alpine plants, and in the right season the wildflowers add splashes of colour across the mountains.
Plunge into the refreshing alpine waters of Rocky Valley Dam, Pretty Valley Pondage and the not-so-secret Secret Pools are the ways you can still get your summer soak.
4. Slow down
Not every summer holiday needs a packed itinerary. Start with a leisurely breakfast, take a short walk, spend the afternoon reading in the sun, and finish with a meal or a drink where seasonal venues are open. The evenings are cool, and on a clear night watch the sunset on the mountain tops and see a sky is full of stars.
Is everything closed at Falls Creek in summer?
It's a fair question, and one worth answering honestly. Falls Creek is a seasonal alpine resort, and winter is its busiest time. In summer, some accommodation, restaurants, shops and resort facilities close or operate reduced hours, and the village is much quieter.
But quieter doesn't mean there's nothing to do. In summer the landscape takes centre stage, and walking, riding and scenery become the main attractions. The key is realistic expectations. Before you book:
- Check which accommodation is open on your dates
- Confirm that your preferred cafes and restaurants are operating
- Check the activities and services available, especially midweek or outside peak holiday periods
- Not sure what's open on your dates? Our team can help
Why Falls Creek makes a great summer getaway
We're not suggesting you give up beach holidays for good. But if you've spent recent summers fighting for a car park or a patch of sand, maybe it's time for something different.
- A cooler climate. Falls Creek sits high in the Victorian Alps, so days are often milder than in the city or on the coast. It can still get warm, and the sun is strong at altitude, so sun protection is essential.
- Room to breathe. Beach towns get crowded in school holidays and on long weekends. Falls Creek offers a quieter atmosphere, especially outside peak periods.
- Adventure is more than water. Swap surfing and swimming for alpine walks, mountain biking, scenic drives, and there are plenty of alpine water for those invigorating dips.
- A real chance to switch off. A few days in the mountains means less traffic, fewer notifications and more time with the people you're travelling with.
Tip: Be weather-ready. Mountain weather is less predictable than many people expect. A sunny morning can turn cool or wet quickly, so:
- Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses and plenty of water
- Check the forecast, trail conditions and road access before you leave
- Check seasonal business opening dates
Who is Falls Creek in summer for?
- Families. Yes, with some planning. Younger children enjoy shorter walks, picnics and nature spotting, while older kids and teens may love mountain biking. Choose activities that suit your group, and note that family-friendly facilities and services may be more limited in summer.
- Couples. Scenic walks, fresh air and quiet evenings make a peaceful weekend away.
- Groups of friends. Get active together, try new trails or enjoy a scenic road trip.
- Solo travellers. Explore at your own pace, take photographs and enjoy a genuine break from everyday distractions.
When is the best time to visit Falls Creek outside winter?
You don't need an action-packed itinerary. A few good walks, beautiful views and a comfortable place to stay are often plenty.
Summer generally runs from December to February, though conditions and seasonal operations vary each year.
December: The summer season gets under way. Wildflowers are starting to bloom.
January: Popular for school holidays and the busiest summer month.
February: A good option for a mountain escape outside the busiest holiday period. Time to escape the heat of summer.
March and April: More stable weather, though days are shorter and cooler. Come during our events or the Easter Holidays, or during the quieter times for an early-autumn getaway.
