Why stay in Falls Creek for Peaks Challenge?
Sleep where the action is.
Peaks Challenge starts and finishes at the Falls Creek Event Village at Slalom Plaza, so staying on the mountain means you’re already at the start line. There’s no early morning drive up the mountain and no need to worry about getting through road closures before the event.
Bicycle Network advises riders staying outside Falls Creek the road from Mt Beauty will close at 5:15AM the day of the ride. Staying on the mountain removes one very big thing from your early-morning checklist.
Bicycle Network requires all participants to attend the Event Village on Saturday 6 March 2027, with bike checks and registration taking place before the ride. The rider briefing is also compulsory.
Staying in Falls Creek makes the whole weekend simpler: arrive, check in, get your bike sorted, collect your rider information and settle in before the big day.
Other options for accommodation include:
Mount Beauty: 45min drive
Bright: 1hr 15min drive
Mount Hotham: 2hr 15min drive
Dinner Plain: 2hr 30min drive
Omeo: 1hr 30min drive
Find accommodation that works for cyclists
Every rider has different needs. Some want a quiet apartment where they can prepare their own meals and get an early night. Others prefer a lodge where dinner and breakfast are taken care of. Groups may want to stay together in a larger apartment, while travelling supporters might be looking for something comfortable and central.
Tell us what you need, and we’ll help you find the best available option:
• Number of riders and guests
• Your budget
• Apartment, lodge or hotel-style accommodation
• Location within the village
• Self-catering facilities
• Bike storage or suitable bike facilities where available
• Parking and access requirements
• Whether you are travelling with family or a support crew
What you need to know about Peaks Challenge weekend
Friday 5 March 2027 – Get settled
Most of the accommodation providers have a minimum of three nights. This also helps you settle in and become acclimatised to the 1600 m average altitude, get familiar with the village and appreciate the beauty of the surrounds.
Saturday 6 March 2027 – Get organised
Saturday is not just the day before the ride. It is an important part of your Peaks Challenge weekend.
All riders must attend the Event Village and have their bike inspected before they can register or start the event. The bike check looks at items including front and rear brakes and lights, with bike mechanics available to assist.
You’ll also need to attend the compulsory rider briefing.
Sunday 7 March 2027 – Ride day
The ride starts and finishes at the Falls Creek Event Village.
The course takes riders through some of the Victorian High Country’s most famous cycling terrain:
Tawonga Gap → Mount Hotham → Omeo → Anglers Rest → the back of Falls Creek
The ride is 235km with more than 4,000 metres of climbing and a 13-hour time limit.
Bicycle Network provides extensive event support, including road closures, rest areas, nutrition and hydration, medical and mechanical support, timing and SAG wagons.
But don’t underestimate the mountain. The weather in the Victorian High Country can change quickly, so riders should be prepared for a range of conditions throughout the day.
Monday 8 March 2027 – Relax and Recovery Day
While everyone is rushing home, why not stay a little longer and savour the stoke of completing your challenge by spending some time in Falls Creek to recover. There are gentle walks, vistas to see, highest driveable peak in Australia, quaint historical huts to visit, waterways and lakes to easy the body and mind.
Getting to Falls Creek
Falls Creek is approximately 391km from Melbourne, around 120km from Albury-Wodonga and approximately 30km from Mount Beauty. Drive times can vary, particularly around event weekend.
Driving to Falls Creek from Mount Beauty on the day of the event requires you to be in the Village before 5.30 am before the road is closed for the event.
Allow extra time for:
• Traffic around the High Country
• Event-related traffic management
• Parking and village access
• Checking in to your accommodation
• Bike preparation and registration
Parking and village access
Peaks Challenge weekend brings changes to normal village access and parking arrangements. Exact arrangements and road closure times are released closer to the event and may change from year to year.
Falls Creek has previously introduced restricted village parking, long-term parking arrangements and an Accommodation Transfer Service during Peaks weekend. Generally there is a 30min village parking limit allowing guests to unload luggage at their accommodation before parking vehicles in the overnight parking lots at the base of the village.
Paid parking at Falls Creek is only applicable during the declared winter snow season... Summer access is free of charge.
We recommend checking the latest Falls Creek Resort Management and Bicycle Network information before travelling.
What should I bring?
Peaks Challenge has mandatory equipment requirements. Check the Bicycle Network detailed list for more information.
Recommended items include a mobile phone, sunglasses, sunscreen, extra riding layers, waterproof gloves, a multi-tool and appropriate cycling clothing.
As the event is in the Victorian Alps be prepared for every variation of weather – things can turn very quickly, not only on the day but also between the valley and the peaks. It can even snow!
And remember the obvious things that are easy to forget when you're focused on the bike: warm clothes for before and after the ride, comfortable shoes, chargers and something to eat when you finally finish.
What about food?
There is a small Foodworks supermarket at Falls Creek which will stock some of the basics, as well as snacks, but do not rely on them for anything specialised. You can visit the Foodworks supermarket in Mount Beauty before driving up to Falls Creek, Woolworths in Bright, Coles in Myrtleford or Supermarkets in Albury/Wodonga are the next closest options. Mount Beauty Foodworks has the option to purchase your order online to pick up on your way: https://mountbeauty-shop.foodworks.com.au/
